(Around L'Angélus) at the family home of the painter Jean-François Millet at Gréville-Hague
Zone de Texte: ©T.Seni-DSMD-cg50In the first half of the 20th century, the painting by Jean-François Millet, L’Angélus, painted in 1857, was portrayed on biscuit tins, cereal bowls and post office calendars. Did this represent a collective, posthumous tribute to the artist from Barbizon or the exceptional fortune of an image of life in the fields typical of France in the first half of the 20th century? Works of art have always been copied, interpreted, reproduced, but rarely with such insistence. So, why Millet? Why this particular work of art?

18th June to 5th September "Millet, at the dawn of Impressionism" exhibition at the Musée Thomas-Henry, Cherbourg-Octeville

© Castel Vendon - Millet - Musée Thomas Henry Cherbourg – JM Enault

From 10h to 12h and from 14h to 18h,  everyday except on Sunday morning and Monday morning. Free admission.
Focusing on the landscapes of the Nord-Cotentin area, with its cliffs, sea and hedged fields, this exhibition presents a collection of pastels, oils and drawings on loan from museums around the world. The works on display are quite different to the country scenes for which Millet is famous and will introduce visitors to a different side of the artist's work.

These landscapes characterised by Millet's particular treatment of light (which show him to be a true precursor of the impressionists), can still be seen in the region of La Hague, where Millet was born. Walking through this region, visitors often feel as though they are "walking through a painting by Millet".

26th June to 25th Sept September Maxence Rifflet – Cherbourg via the coast" (working title) - Cherbourg-Octeville
At the invitation of Le Point du Jour, an arts centre based in Cherbourg, photographer Maxence Rifflet has produced a series of images which follow the coastal road (known as the "route touristique") from Cherbourg to Coutances.
Maxence Rifflet is a young artist and a pupil of the art historian Jean-François Chevrier, a professor at the Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Rifflet views photography as an art and an occupation, as well as a source of information and formal research. Most notably, he has exhibited his work at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d’Arles in 2006.
In his photographs, taken between 2007 and 2009, Rifflet highlights different aspects of this section of the coast – economic activity, natural landscapes, architecture – keeping in mind our contemporary relationship with nature as well as the image of the landscapes created by 19th century painters.
At the same time, the Pôle Image Haute-Normandie in Rouen will present the results of Maxence Rifflet's second period of residence in Normandy, in an exhibition entitled "Les Boucles de la Seine" (The Meanders of the Seine). All these works will be highlighted in a book published to coincide with the two exhibitions.
